Cancel Culture And Sports

The Washington Football Team moving on from the name “Redskins” is just the tipping point this day and age, I believe; only to gain momentum within the next few years like a snowball rolling downhill. Do I agree/disagree with any of this? I have my opinions, but it doesn’t affect my day to day life. I just sit back and watch things unfold naturally. Am I swayed one way or another in my opinion? Possibly. Only because I have the capability of listening, researching, and understanding your point of view on the subject. It’s great conversation for the morning water cooler if you can agree to disagree. If we could all be that way the world wouldn’t tilt off of it’s axis on a daily basis, it would rotate naturally with mutual respect to the atmosphere.

In today’s world things are taken out of context at an alarming rate. People cannot see past the tips of their noses. Excuses are made that “oh they’re just set in their ways!” That’s all well and good, but to change with the times we must adapt to the current. None of this is going away any time soon. I’m not sure when, or even if other Colleges and Franchises such as the Cleveland Indians, San Diego St. Aztecs, Florida State Seminoles, Kansas City Chiefs, or hell, maybe even the Miami Hurricanes is considered offensive to some! Who am I to judge? I have asked myself before “why now?” “Why all of these changes right now?” Because now is the time. If you want your voice to be heard today is all the platform you need. Do I think some of the changes going on are ridiculous? Of course. I think some just feel the need to stick their nose in for recognition, and don’t really want true change.

Colin Kaepernick is a prime example. He sacrificed everything whether you agree with him or not. To me that’s commendable. My question was “what exactly does he want?” He got the conversation started and then some. What was the end game? Change does not, and will not happen overnight. Racism will always exist. It always has. But, the changes that have taken place are a step in the right direction for sure. So why the name changes? Honestly, there are good reasons for changing certain things that offend specific groups of people. But to change the name out of panic due to mainstream media and come up with “The Washington Football Team” just doesn’t cut it. It isn’t a very “sexy” name from a marketing standpoint, these things take time. The NFL is a business, there are legal actions, time frames that should not be rushed to re-brand an entire organization that has been around for ages.

Conclusion: The movements #Blacklivesmatter and #MeToo are necessary movements that have brought to light some long overdue issues. At the same time it has also brought out the extremists who want to attack everything. A common ground must be found. But trying to find that is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.  Some of the cancel culture stuff is ridiculous. If it came down to changing a name of a football team that has offended Native Americans for years versus a cartoon character that forces himself on an animated lady? I’ll start with the Redskins.
